The right-to-buy law removed the low cost council housing alternative to the private rented sector.  I feel it is a distraction to scapegoat "evil private landlords" for our housing  problems; the problems are entirely due to the last 30 years of governments Housing policy, which uses housing benefit to subsidies our private rented  consumer service. Average house price of £237,000 in the southeast of England is 10 to 16  times average local salaries [1].  Two and a half...

"And as to neoliberalism laid bare. Yes, the industrial revolution is the only way we humans have found of improving the living standards of the average guy in the street. I, as a liberal (even if neo) would like the living standards of the average guy to increase. Thus I support the industrial revolution. Yes, in all its mess and clamour: for it is making things better. I’m out and I&ac...

Today Tory Mayor Boris Johnson has announced a 1 per cent cut in the Mayor's share of council tax. This will save Band D taxpayers in London just £3.10 a year. Ken Livingstone said; "This is just £3.10 a year, whereas I will save Londoners on average £1,000 over four years by cutting the fares on October 7th this year. "I believe in tough times Londoners need a Mayor who wil...

Alan Whitehead pressed the Government in Parliament yesterday over measures to tackle spiralling house prices and rents in the south of England. In Southampton, the average house price is now 9 times the average income, and the average rent for a two-bed home now accounts for 46% of the average income - one of the highest rent to income ratios in the country. Shelter's Private Rent Watch (p50...

Polly can be ignorant at times Start with taxing all incomes at the same rate – a worker on an average £26,000 is taxed £5,981, but someone earning the same in dividends pays zero. Those on the 50% tax band only pay 36% on their dividends. Bleedin’ ‘ell Polly! Don’t you know that (in effect) basic rate income tax is collected

I think this might be enough, don’t you? Today the TaxPayers’ Alliance has released new research which shows that the average family pays £656,000 in taxes over their lifetime. That tax payment is around and about equal to the amount which, if saved over the years, would put said household into the top 10% in terms of wealth (850k in net assets). And

The average person spends more than half their day working for the taxman. A disgustingly large fraction of that money is wasted, argues Emma Boon.

This is really very amusing indeed Private owners of capital used the state to force peasants – who, in the 14th century, worked about a quarter of hours that the average person does now – to work 12 hour days in factories. We’re supposed to believe that a peasant working in a subsistence economy works 10 hours a week are we?
