He faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted. Kiriakou is al...

Travellers allegedly rob €200k of CIA money that spook gave Libyan rebel living in Ireland. ROBBED: Mahdi al-Harati According to police sources a well known gang of Irish travellers are in the middle of a holy war - after liberating €200,000 cash destined for Libyan 'rebels.' In a tale worthy of the John le Carre thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, the travelers are said to have hit the jackpot when they robbed a home in Dublin's Firhouse. As well as a haul of fami...

How a former leader of al-Qaeda who wants to introduce Sharia law, got to rule Tripoli in NATO’s New Libya. By Pepe Escobar  His name is Abdelhakim Belhaj. Some in the Middle East might have heard of him, but few in the West beyond the CIA and Mi6 and across the world would have.  Time to catch up. Because the story of how an al-Qaeda asset turned out to be the top Libyan military commander in still war-torn Tripoli is bound to shatter - once again - that wilderness of mirrors that is the "war...

The overthrow of Gaddafi has led to the uncovering of evidence that the CIA colluded with him to torture their suspected opponents, among whom is one prominent rebel leader. An apparently humanitarian policy by the west has, therefore,  exposed its earlier lack of humanitarianism. It is an example of how our actions can rebound to bite us on the arse.

MI6: speech-writers to Colonel Gaddafi? Well, this is an unusual twist as the changes in Libya reveal documents about relations between foreign governments and Colonel Gaddafi: The documents claim that MI6 supplied its counterparts in Libya with details on exiled opponents living in the UK, and chart how the CIA abducted several suspected militants before handing them over to Tripoli.

I am a busy person this weekend so I haven't time to do much more than to link to this fascinating interview with a former CIA operative on his experiences of living in Iran. With all the troubles in the world right now, it pays to keep an eye on a country and a regime that continues to be a serious threat. More optimistically, though, if Iran ever did move towards genuine openness and democr...

Obituary: Julia Burdett; community activist who had absolute contempt for David Cameron's mockney big society. Julia Burdett, who has died of cancer aged 59, lived an intensely political life. She arrived in Britain aged 14, the eldest child of a family that was identified with Cheddi Jagan and the anti-colonial movement which had been forced to leave Guyana as a result of the instability fomented by the CIA. She started to study law at Trent Polytechnic (now Nottingham Trent University), but was...
