Clegg at the Attlee The Deputy Prime Minister himself, Nick Clegg, spoke at the joint Hansard Society, Political Studies Association meeting last night in the Attlee Suite at Portcullis House. But not until he - or, rather, the Political Studies Association - had been properly introduced by its chairman. Professor Vicky Randall proudly informed us that the Political Studies Association exists to promote.....political...

It was the evening of May 5th 2010 and after a long campaign season BUCF were held up in a suite in the Radisson hotel anxiously (and drunkenly) awaiting the results of the General Election. As the night progressed it became clearer and clearer that Britain was to have its first Hung Parliament since the

Lib Dem conference: Has it all gone right? Liverpool: This Liberal Democrat conference reminds me of a story George Best used to tell about his fans' lack of perspective. George Best in Marbella, May 1972 The football legend was at the height of his fame and fortune but on a run of poor form on the pitch. In a smart London hotel, he called room service to bring up some iced champagne. When the waiter arrived in the suite, he recognise...

A good scoop from The Catholic Herald. Stuart Reid reveals what Mayor Boris Johnson said to the Pontiff last night: 'I’d like to tell you what went on in the Royal Suite at Terminal 4 last night when Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, met Joseph Ratzinger, the Pope of Rome. “I told the Pope,” said Boris, “that what was wrong with Britain was that the Roman Emperor Hon...

It is almost 19 years now since Mikhail Gorbachev announced his resignation as President and, with it, the dissolution of the Soviet Union. But even after all these years, and everything that has happened in between, there is still something surprising and almost unreal about greeting, and being greeted by, Mikhail Gorbachev in his sun-lit suite at a London hotel. He's a bit heavier now, less...

I understand that the 500 euro note (about £430) is to be withdrawn from circulation as it turns out that 90% of them were tainted by criminal activity. It's quite gratifying to realise that the powers that be are actually listening to yours truly ;) It is, I suppose, an example of the law of unintended consequences, but I wonder if it is in fact possible to devise a system better suite...

David Cameron and George Osborne have regularly referred to a 'massage room' and a 'contemplation suite' as examples of government waste. The truth, hidden because government departments can't defend themselves during an election because of purdah rules, it quite different. The Contemplation Room, in particular is used by muslim staff to pray. A prayer room, standard pract...

LIZ JONES: Stop being so mean to bankers, they're nice A couple of weeks ago I was on an important business trip to Hong Kong. Oh! you should have seen it. No expense spared. Penthouse suite, minibar chock full of champagne, and foie gras served up by the cartload at dinner by the spectacularly polite oriental waiters. Of course, I wasn't really there on important business: I'm not a business lady! But it's nice to pretend sometimes. Anyway, there I w...
