It is six years since the invasion of Iraq, which makes the Iraq war approximately the same age as the late Ivan Cameron. Gordon Brown responded to Ivan Cameron's death with a tribute to three servicemen killed in Afghanistan and Iraq, and went on to note that "every child is precious and irreplaceable, and the death of a child is an unbearable sorrow that no parent should ever have to endure".

I didn't see David Cameron's speech today, but I did just catch what the BBC described as the 'highlights' on the BBC's Today at Conference. Did Cameron really devote a whole section of his speech to "Our brave soldiers in Afghanistan' and not once mention those that he voted to send to fight, and maybe die, in Iraq? Perhaps the war in Iraq is no longer popular enough...

I continue to enjoy Dave Osler’s blog just because of the quality of his writing, but sadly the comments threads are increasingly bereft of sentient life. Recently Dave raised the question of “why Iraq is not a rerun of Afghanistan” He makes some intelligent points about the political differences, As far as the situation can be read

Iraq, Afghanistan and the re-deployment problem The idea of switching troops from Iraq to Afghanistan seems deceptively simple. In fact the problems of re-deploying Britain's over-stretched army will pose the main constraint on how many more soldiers can be sent if, as expected, President elect Barack Obama mobilises Nato countries to send reinforcements to Afghanistan. Although ministers are still vague about the timetable of Britain'...
