Was the Euro-result a flash in the pan? There was only one story following the recent elections to the European Parliament – the success of the parties of the far right (UKIP and the BNP). Unlike most contributors and commenters on LC, I have consistently argued that the votes for these parties should be seen as a bloc. Campaigning against the BNP –

During the coming days and weeks, the existing political groups in the European Parliament and various national parties with elected members of the EP negotiate to form the political groups, which are central to parliamentary work. The electorate's disillusionment with the mainstream parties is at an all-time high, voting at an all-time low and active participation in political parties is, in too many communities, seemingly non-existent. The consequence is that we are now sending home-grown fascists to ...

They are vital for democracy because parties offer the most clear-cut political choices that are put to the electorate. Parties are also recruitment organisations, through w...

The victory of the BNP in last week’s elections ought to raise questions as to the way in which the parties campaigned about them. Certainly the failings of the mainstream political parties in terms of policy and conduct play an extremely important role.  Likewise the refusal of politicians to engage sensibly with the issue of immigration
