According to the Health Service Journal, the Treasury will today outline £9bn of public sector cuts. The Treasury is seeking these savings from back office efficiencies and collaborative procurement. They believe their "operation efficiency programme" has uncovered "huge variation" in spending on human resources and utilities such as electricity in particular.

The Audit Commissions recent Back to Front Report claims that local authorities can deliver 28 per cent of savings through back office efficiencies; at the same time the report also indicates that councils can achieve even greater efficiency savings through strategically uniting frontline services with the back office.
