The Czech government of Vaclav Klaus looks as if it is now ready to ratify the Lisbon Treaty that redefines the European constitution. It is the last government to do so, which means that the treaty is likely to be ratified by the time of the next British general election, and the widely expected change of government. David Cameron, whose otherwise modern new party* is racked by deep-seated euro-s...

I admit to being somewhat surprised by the outrage and vitriol directed towards David Cameron over the supposed U-Turn on Lisbon. After all, what did you expect? The promise of a referendum was only any good as long as the Treaty remained unratified.By the time David Cameron has any chance of becoming PM the Lisbon Treaty will have been European law for nearly 6 months. That is an irreversible

No election 'til Lisbon There will be no General Election until Ireland ratifies the Lisbon Treaty. David Cameron has made this perfectly plain. The Irish are being forced again to vote in the Autumn due to not voting the right way before and the Czechs and Poles will be told to do the same by the 27 unelected Commissars who run the EU Politburo. A vote for Cameron and the Tories is a vote for the unelected EU. Ken Clark...

The real question is: why did this split take so long to come up at all? Did the Tories really think Cameron would have withdrawn entirely from the Lisbon Treaty or from the EU? The new EU policy is a joke for precisely that reason: there has never been a coherent plan hatched by Cameron to deal with Europe. All they did was try to ride the populist tabloid outrage at Euro-myths.

Thursday news DAVID Cameron has written to Czech President Václav Klaus confirming his intention to hold a referendum on the EU's Lisbon Treaty should he win power next year before the treaty has entered into force. Cameron had reassured Klaus that if he held up the treaty, Cameron would stage a referendum in Britain if he wins power in an election due by next May. This would force pro-Lisbon member states to ...
