There’s been a fair degree of criticism of the Lib Dems’ parliamentary by-election performances in the last couple of years: the 2006 ‘glory days’ of beating Labour in Dunfermline, and coming oh-so-close against the Tories in Bromley have seemed an increasingly distant memory. So, let’s celebrate an arena where the party is doing well: local

While the media attention is directed towards pontificating over various scenarios for a hung parliament and various Lib/Lab/Con coalition connotations something very interesting has been happening in the local elections. Big gains for Labour - heavy losses for the Tories and Lib Dems. Early days in those results yet I guess, but if this keeps on then I think it will signal a total disaster for th...

With another poll showing the Tories short of the lead they need to be sure of a majority—ICM for the Sunday Telegraph has the Tories on 38, Labour on 31 and the Lib Dems on 21—we are going to hear even more about a hung parliament and the role of the Lib Dems; I can’t remember any Lib Dem leader getting as much media attention as Nick Clegg has had these past four days. But if t...

ComRes Poll - Labour move towards third party status. Another good poll for the Lib Dems sees them only 3 points behind Labour. The jungle drums will be beating around Westminster for the next few days. How can Labour possibly hope to win an election if things get worse and they are pushed into third place in the polls? Are you ready for a snap election?

Campaign focus: Beating the Tories in Harlow A week ago today, it was polling day in a key by-election in Harlow, a key Lib Dem / Tory marginal. The result was a win for the Lib Dems from the Tories on a swing of 10.5%. Here Lorna Spenceley, Lib Dem parliamentary spokeswoman for Harlow, tells Lib Dem Voice how it happened… In one

The BBC’s Nick Robinson thinks it is in spite of the Labour Government’s official denials. The Lib Dems’ shadow home secretary Chris Huhne wrote here on Lib Dem Voice back in the summer explaining why detaining without trial terrorist suspects for 42 days was wrong both in principle and in practice: Detention without charge for terrorist suspects

Half the members of Plymouth's Liberal Democrat Executive have defected to Labour only a few days before the General Election. Local Lib Dem members Jan Mortier, Tom Sale, Max Harding and Dominic House were all members of the Plymouth Lib Dem executive committee. They were the elected vice-chair, membership, data and youth officers. They are switching sides ahead of the General Election as th...

After the gales of recent weeks, the past few days must have been relatively blissful for the Lib Dems. No fake constituents with hidden dictaphones. No massive student protests. No especial focus on their opinion poll ratings. But, instead, a mephitic heap of problems, or at least embarrassments, for Labour and the Tories. Warsi, Johnson, Coulson, even EMAs – Clegg & Co. have been s...

If today’s Populus poll in The Times is accurate, then Gordon Brown’s will be fighting a last-ditch battle to save his premiership nine days from now. The poll has Labour heading for a 16 percent share of the vote at the European elections behind both the Tories, 30 percent, and UKIP, 19 percent. The Lib Dems are on 12 and the Greens on 10. The general election polling is equally grim ...
