Via the Kitchen, I see that Comic Relief is chucking money at Fake Charities: In 2004, Comic Relief funded Alcohol Concern and London Drug and Alcohol Network to produce an online toolkit that would help local alcohol leads develop and implement cross cutting local alcohol strategies. This means that people giving money to Comic Relief are actually then handing the money over to an organisation th...

Clive Betts teamed up with a bevy of MPs and Members of the House of Lords to complete a Westminster Mile for Sport Relief on Wednesday 10th March. More than 30 Parliamentarians, including Minister for Sport Gerry Sutcliffe, swapped their suits for shorts, trainers and Sport Relief Socks to test their sporting prowess in St James's Park. They were joined by former England Rugby player Kyran B...

Given the outcry about the proposed changes to capital gains tax taper relief, don't be surprised if the Government performs a U-turn in next year's Budget. Here are my predictions: They may decide to 'phase in' the abolition of the relief, in order to take some of the sting away. Maybe by tinkering with the rates somewhat. You can trust this Government to make things more complicated than they ne...

Fr Tim Finigan writes: A couple of people have emailed me to ask about Comic Relief and the associated Red Nose Day which is coming up on 13 March. This is heavily promoted on the television and in advertising directed to young people. It is generally a bad idea to give money to generic fundraising initiatives of this kind. Far better to choose a few deserving and trustworthy charities yourself an...

The slogan is "do something funny for money". But apart from appearing outside Downing Street with celebrities Gary Barlow, Cheryl Cole and Kimberley Walsh, who climbed Kilimanjaro to raise money for Comic Relief – and announcing £2m towards fighting malaria – what has Gordon Brown done this Red Nose Day? His predecessor, Tony Blair, set the bar high with a guest appearance in Ca...

Just had a thought whilst shaving this morning, what about mortgage tax relief ? The problem is that too many people are defaulting on their mortgages. Currently all the plans seem to bail our the banks at the expense of the people. What if mortgage tax relief, say on a set amount of the mortgage (as used to be the case ) was used to keep mortgages affordable - stop the defaulting and keep the ban...

During as long on the Governing Body of my old secondary school as I had been a pupil there, I did have my moments when it came to the manifest Catholic character, or otherwise, of the place. But I am told that all public displays of Comic Relief were banned this year. Laus Deo!
