Politicians talk constantly about “lifting people out of poverty”, mending our “broken society”, giving people “equality of opportunity” and, more rarely “creating a more equal society”. What none of them seem to be prepared to face is the fact that people are poor principally because they have less money than others; and that when

Our society really is big. And it suffers from no lack of definition. It’s a big society. It’s a broken society. It’s a big and broken society. The big society needs to save our broken society. There is such a thing as society, but it’s not the same as the state. And once, there was

David Cameron's big idea is to mend Britain's "broken society", tackling the root causes of poverty and deprivation rather than throwing more money at them. His aides admit privately he will need to explain his mission a million times before the public will hear his message - let alone be convinced by it - but that won't deter him.

What does Cameron's 'broken society' say about us? It may be a picture of an uncivil, rude, selfish society, but what it is not is a broken society. If this were America he would be absolutely crucified for not being patriotic about his own country. And yet, we're not only falling for it, but the left has nothing even coherent to say in response.

I have always been a little cynical of the phrase "broken society"; because much of society isn't broken and there are a great number of people who care for their families, their neighbours and act in a decent way. However clearly there are great challenges which need to be addressed in this area. I have said for a long time that we as a party need to "seal the deal" with voters and we could ...
