The City’s elopement with New Labour has ended violently. A poll of leading financiers, conducted by City AM, reveals that 73 percent think that a Tory majority would be best for the economy; a mere 10 percent support Labour. But the City has little enthusiasm for George Osborne: 23 percent neleiev he has the mettle to be Chancellor, 13 percent behind Ken Clarke. So where is it going wrong f...

David Cameron would be making a "catastrophic" mistake if he were to replace George Osborne as shadow chancellor, Ken Clarke said today. In an interview with the Daily Mail, the former chancellor said that Osborne was the victim of a whispering campaign against him, but that he should remain in post. Some Tories have been speculating about Osborne being moved because opinion polls suggest that the...

Much as I like George Osborne, it has become clear - for the reasons explained by Iain Martin - that he cannot continue as Shadow Chancellor. Iain suggests that there are two plausible replacements: William Hague and Ken Clarke. Of the two, the most attractive candidate politically would be Ken Clarke. As Chancellor George Osborne confirmed fares will rise by 6% in London next year, Ken Livingstone said: "What Londoners need is a fares cut, and a commitment to hold down the fares - not George Osborne and Boris Johnson confirming yet another big fare increase. "Today's announcement by the Tory Mayor and Tory Chancellor means rising travelcard costs and no end in sight for farepayers. "George...

So, Ken Clarke, the former Conservative Chancellor of the Exchequer, has been brought back into the publicc eye as he returns as David Cameron's business spokesman to counter Peter Mandelson. The deal was sealed over lunch on Saturday between Mr Cameron, Mr Clarke and Shadow Chancellor George Osborne. Clarke, a rabid europhile, has voted against the party whip 33 times, more than any of his c...

I cannot believe that they are considering bringing back Ken Clarke. According to Andrew Porter from the Telegraph, George Osborne is said to welcome the move. I will tell you now that bringing back Clarke will destroy any chance the Conservative party has of winning the next General Election. There is no place on the front bench for a Europhile. Bring back Clarke and watch the poll ratings plumme...

New Yougov / Channel 4 full poll results HERE. Tories 7 points ahead in the Labour marginals, but they echo Heffer's view of Cameron and Osborne - Gorgeous George only scoring 15% against Ken Clarke's 39% as to which would make the best Chancellor. And 43% thinking Dave would be as heartless as Maggie if you're unemployed against 42% who think he'd do better. Hey ho.
