Women working full-time in the UK get paid 17% less than men. As this is equivalent to women working the last two months of the year for free, the Fawcett Society have calcuated that today marks women’s no pay day - from today until the end of the year many women are effectively working for...

A test case that could affect thousands of low-paid women workers struggling to get the same pay as male colleagues began in the Court of Appeal today. The case involves two groups of women working for local councils in the North East but the outcome could apply to women working for every council and health authority in England and Scotland.

Nichola Pease, a top City executive, caused a stir last week when she said that state-enforced maternity leave "rights" for women - and for that matter, paternity leave - was a cost that had a bad consequence. If you tell a company that it must pay a woman her full salary for a year while she is not working and raising her child, say, then, other things being equal, fewer women will be employed in...

Gordon's Women The Labour ladies have turned on Brown again, this time in "Gordon's Women" on radio 4. The programme explores whether or not Gordon has a problem working with women. I don't think it's a solely a female issue, Brown's problem is working with people that criticise him in general. This has increased as he's become more vulnerable, illustrated by his cabinet reshuffle being basically an act of putti...

Nosemonkey has a post about Romas being persecuted in Italy. But what struck me as strange was one quote about a couple of gipsy women being accused of trying to kidnap a child (my emphasis): two Roma women were accused in Lecco for trying to steal a child. Both of them declared they were begging with no intention whatsoever of kidnapping. In order to avoid being sentenced both of them accepted th...

The fact that single, childless women earn more than their male counterparts due to having greater educational qualifications demonstrates the reality that labor markets are efficient and that wages are based on the value an employee creates for the employer.  The fact that married women with children earn less than married men with children or single, child...

British taxpayers are funding child benefit payments for 37,900 children who live in Poland, Treasury figures show. Well, yes. And a lot of people are unhappy about this but I’m not sure why. If the parent is here and working and paying taxes then they should get the same tax breaks as a British citizen working here

Linking at Guido’s from this back to this (both about the ridiculous Derek Draper), I find this, from Rachel Sylvester: Twitter is reality TV without the pictures. Which may be true, but in my opinion the potential of reality TV (if maybe not actually existing reality TV) is much underrated.  I find this comment, from “Thatcher’s Child”, on this earlier post more intri...
