I've never been on a demonstration - unless the million strong march in support of foxhunting, which took place in the run up to the passing of the Hunting with Dogs Act counts. As I recall, that was just a gentle stroll through the streets of London. But I was thinking of carrying my first placard tomorrow morning - but eventually decided against it. Let me explain. Background to this is the...

Oooohkay. Looks like it’s nearly official. I’m to be working in London from Oct onwards for 10 months or so. Thus I need to find some place to rest my weary etc. Yes, I can have a look around the flat share boards etc, and will do. I’ve got a sorta offer of a place out in Dartford

Mid Suffolk mon amour Alright, I freely admit that, until I met Ros, the smallest place I had lived (apart from my university days) had a population in excess of seven million - a cosy little place called London. Now I spend my weekends - apart from those on the road with Ros - in Creeting St Peter, population 260 (and that's the entire parish!). The area has no stunning scenery, no significant tourist attractions, no ...

Back from London I flew to London Wednesday morning on business. Thursday was meetings all day long, followed by a dinner of Argentinian steak.  Friday, visited an American friend who moved to London five months ago, and who loves the place. Saturday, met up with Alison and Pete Moore at the Churchill Arms ( foreground right is Pete, foreground left is Alison, up top is me ) Great fun, and lets do that a...

Manchester has voted overwhelming against a local congestion charge, similar in style to the charge in London. Over a million people voted in the ballot which had a high 53% turnout. The charge, together with a massive injection of cash from national government, would have meant massive investment in public transport and infrastructure, oh, and the ability to get from place to place in a reasonabl...

London is a DISGRACE London gang areas Londonistan OH has been in London for the past few days. I very very rarely go there because I detest public transport (it gives you nits and bedbugs) but I had to travel around to get some shit done with a German business partner. Anyway, my point. The place is a fucking shithole. I was born in London and lived most of my young life in South London. You wouldn't recognise i...

Allister Heath has been on fire lately with his analysis of the London riots. Worth reading, Britain’s in crisis: the real causes of chaos on streets and From royal fairytale to banana republic. I note this morning there is a very real discussion in the UK taking place of cutting off social media, including Blackberry Messenger. You do not get to that point in the UK unless governance polici...

Handel in London – and an angelic tenor aria Lebrecht writes about the place in the history of classical music of London: in the premier league of music capitals, London struggles for recognition beside Vienna, Paris and Milan. It is regarded as a bit of a parvenu, a place of skimpy traditions, capital of what Germans used to call the Land Without Music. None of the three Bs - Bach Beethoven, Brahms - ever set foot on British soil and no sym...

It is a glorious morning. The daffodils are still pretty perky. The tulips are surging away. The birds are a-wooing and a-cooing all over the place, and it seems absolutely criminal on a morning like this – an April morning, when there is frankly nowhere in the universe more lovely than England – that I
