The Labour Party is extremely saddened to hear about the death of Ashok Kumar, MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland. Mr Kumar was found dead at home this morning. Mr Kumar was 53 years old and first entered parliament in November 1991 at a by-election for the Langbaurgh constituency. He re-gained the seat at the General Election in 1997. David Walsh, Secretary of Middlesbrough South &...

As a devout believer in greater representation for women in Parliament I decided to investigate what would happen to the number of female MPs should the Tories win the next general election. So I drew up a list of the 50 most marginal Labour seats with the majority and name of MP in each and then added the name of the party which was second in each seat at the 2005 General Election. Finally I look...

The BBC's Parliament Channel is broadcasting their recording (from black-and-white film, by the look of it) of the 1964 General Election. It was an interesting election, in that although Labour won it from the Conservatives, they gained relatively few seats in the north of England, and in fact lost Smethwick to the Conservatives. It is interesting to watch the election coverage from that time,

I’m pretty sceptical of the chatter about Gordon Brown calling an early general election*. Here’s one the reasons which hasn’t been much talked about. Imagine we have an early election. Imagine too that Labour manages what is probably the limit of its hopes – largest party in a hung Parliament. (Witness Labour MPs going round telling

How Labour could (easily) win the next general election There are increasingly feverish and not entirely speculative rumours that Gordon Brown might yet resign before the next general election to become another ‘world leader’. There are two schools of thought on Labour’s election-winning strategy. The first is that it no longer matters who leads the Labour Party - they are known to be such a shower of abhorrent incompetents that victo...

CONSERVATIVES 41% (-1) LABOUR 36% (+3) LIB DEMS 14% (-1) Labour back to General Election level of support The first of tonight’s new national opinion polls is just out and has Labour narrowing even further the gap with the Tories. The five point margin, if repeated at a general election, puts a general election well within hung parliaments territory.

Statement from Respect Party Leader Salma Yaqoob The General Election is a matter of months away. Once again, this is an election in which only two parties are competing to form a government – Labour or the Tories. A series of opinion polls have pointed strongly to the defeat of the Labour government. The outcome,

As I write, the parliament channel is now running the highlights of the Beeb's morning after the election coverage. Various experts are discussing the implications of her victory. Paul Johnson, with flowing red hair, has said he doesn't know whether Mrs T will give Ted Heath a job in the cabinet. Anthony Howard says gravely that she must. Which way will the Labour party now turn? Howard ...

As the general election 2010 draws near, and David Cameron's Conservative Party's lead slips, the possibility of a hung parliament grows daily. But what would it mean?
