Well, who would have thought it. The Shadow Secretary of State for Wales, Cheryl Gillan issuing a press release, taking the actual Secretary of State, Peter Hain to task for not getting on with the procedures necessary to deliver a referendum on law making powers for the National Assembly. We do know that Peter Hain is not that keen on holding a referendum. Mrs Gillan tells us that Mr Hain has wri...

Excellent to see that the ruling parties at the Assembly are still committed to a referendum. I was buoyed a few weeks back by this exchange at the Assembly. Helen Mary Jones: Will the First Minister give an update on progress towards a referendum on full law-making powers under Part 4 of the Government of Wales Act 2006? The First Minister: The All-Wales Convention will report to the Assembly Gov...

An opinion poll has been published about opinions towards the constitutional set-up for Wales. (BBC News: Majority back law-making assembly) Whilst it seems doubtful that there will be a referendum just yet, the direction suggests opinion settling towards what could be the final settlement for Wales. The figures are: In favour of turning assembly into full law-making parliament: 52% Against turnin...

Apologies in advance. I'm returning to the process by which law making power is currently being transferred from the UK Parliament to the National Assembly for Wales. The reason is that last Thursday the Secretary of State for Wales, Paul Murphy introduced yet another complexity into what is an already complex process. Let me explain. In 2006, the UK Parliament passed a new act by which power...

It seems that the Secretary of State, Peter Hain may have succeeded in delaying the referendum on transferring all law making powers in devolved policy areas from the Westminster Government to the National Assembly until March 2011. Personally, I believe this to be a mistake, which will make a 'Yes' vote less likely. But then, we know that Mr Hain does not want there to be a referendum a...

This will be my last post about the proposed referendum on transferring law making powers to the National Assembly for Wales - until at least the New Year! Its inspired by some of the discussions I enjoyed while in and around the National Assembly this week - including appearances on AM/PM and CF99, where the subject dominated. Much of the discussion followed Labour's clumsy attempts to scupp...

As if to add to the confusion of what exactly they are for the All Wales Convention emerged from their first meeting yesterday and said that it was not their intention to campaign for a referendum on greater law-making powers for the Assembly. Instead they are going to talk to the people or, in the words of Sir Emyr Jones Parry, their priority is to communicate the potential the Assembly already h...
