Record breakers!
Today, Karen and David ran a mile for Sport Relief and joined in the world record simultaneous Hula-Hoop attempt. Leeds Headrow was closed off for the occasion which was also happening elsewhere nationwide. I wasn’t overly keen on getting up early on a Sunday morning but once we parked up (near dark arches) and headed

World Bank: global economy will shrink for first time on record The World Bank's crystal ball is not emitting pleasant forecasts this morning, with the release of the latest Global Economic Prospects Report: "Global GDP is expected to contract by 1.7 percent in 2009, which would be the first decline in world output on record," the report concludes. Developed economies will fall into "deep recession" -- witness Japan's 12.1 percent...

This morning has been noticeably warmed by the collective sigh of relief breathed by the world. Over breakfast, as I stretched to catch snippeted Yes-We-Cans on the radio, my wife tried to calm me down by arguing that Barack Obama isn't our president. Except that he so is. In Europe, we have become used to being investors. A while back we were passively watching our banks collapse. No...

Just had a thought whilst shaving this morning, what about mortgage tax relief ? The problem is that too many people are defaulting on their mortgages. Currently all the plans seem to bail our the banks at the expense of the people. What if mortgage tax relief, say on a set amount of the mortgage (as used to be the case ) was used to keep mortgages affordable - stop the defaulting and keep the ban...

A bit of light relief If there was any justice in this world, all you would have to do in the modern equivalent of a music hall is utter two words (or three): "The European Union". You could add, "foreign policy" and that should guarantee to bring the house down. To illustrate the point you could do no better than refer to the latest development in the long-running farce of the EU Chad peace mission which, as we record...
