On Friday the DoD announced the death of a Navy SEAL who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. The public announcement of a Navy SEAL is uncommon enough to note. Chief Petty Officer (SEAL) Collin Thomas, 33, of Morehead, Ky., died Aug. 18 during a combat operation in eastern Afghanistan. Thomas was assigned to an east coast-based SEAL team.Virginia's WAVY 10 has a detailed article about ...

In an interesting and rather strange Asia Times article on the intertwined relationship between Iran, the U.S., Afghanistan and Pakistan, pro-Iranian commentator Kaveh L Afrasiabi sees possible cooperation between Iran and the U.S. on logistical supply routes to Afghanistan and other things associated with Operation Enduring Freedom.  If one can get by the dreaming, he

Benedict Brogan wrote a Telegraph article called "Election 2010: a bracing reminder of the price we pay for political freedom", in which he notes the cost to Britain's young soldiers in Afghanistan in juxtaposition with the scenes of election tumult. Well I can think of several arguably good reasons for western troops to be fighting in Afghanistan but I sure hate to think of anyone dying for ...

John McCain as part of the televised Presidential debate... "Our problem is that, when we drove the Russians out of Afghanistan... when the Afghan freedom fighters drove the Russians out of Afghanistan... we turned our backs on them..." They just don't get it, do they? Still, after that, they all closed ranks behind Israel. What was that about "Time for Change"? Dream on. Same old, same old.

This is the text of a letter published in the Bromley Times from Cllr John Getgood, Leader of the Labour Group on Bromley Council: Cllr Smith adopted his best Mr Grumpy face for your article on the future of the Freedom Pass but some of the assertions in the article should not go unchallenged. The only threat to the Freedom Pass comes from some Conservative controlled boroughs that do not want to ...

The Captain’s Journal has been an advocate Operation Enduring Freedom for more than eight months, along with the commanders on the ground in Afghanistan. The top brass has heard, but apparently we haven’t been loud enough. General McKiernan is doing his part (as did his predecessor General McNeill who said Afghanistan was an

Read this article by George Pitcher in today's Telegraph. In it, he outlined some of his personal philosophy thus .... "I don't like a big intrusive state, but I want to be properly taxed for good public services, including education. I believe in personal freedom, but that includes the freedom to think liberal thoughts. I'm against capital punishment, but also vehemently opposed to...

This article talks of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. That took place almost exactly 29 years and 1 month ago. Rightly, the writer, Nushin Arbabzadah, highlights that this led to a long war that made millions of Afghans refugees and killed many of them. However, the account she seems to give seems to be a partial one. She does not properly mention that the predecessor regime - that of Daoud - ...
