The concept of property is fundamental to our society, probably to any workable society. Operationally, it is understood by every child above the age of three. Intellectually, it is understood by almost no one. Consider the slogan "property rights vs. human rights." Its rhetorical force comes from the implication that property rights are the rights of property and human rights the rights of humans...

The cross-party Joint Committee on Human Rights has said that there should be a new Bill of Rights [pdf] (or Bill of rights and Freedoms) for the United Kingdom, which will apply to both citizens and non-citizens. It will, it is suggested, draw on the “UK’s distinctive [legal] traditions” (p. 42, No. 146), and set out certain rights, such as the right to trial by jury, right to a...

The persistent growth of the human rights culture is one of the profound menaces to the effective functioning of our society. So what could be more natural for a dim-wit to suggest that "Human rights experts" should be drafted-in to bolster the ranks of civil servants in any new Department of Justice here in Northern Ireland!! "The SDLP's Alex Attwood made his proposal at a Stormont committee...

The Law Society could have done some good last week. The Law Society could have put out a press release reassuring people that the legal risks if you decide to be a good neighbour and clear the snow and ice from outside your home are hugely overstated (i.e. the risk is so tiny no-one I’ve asked
