by Michael Meacher, from Left Futures So David Miliband would pose the greatest threat to the Tories?   How convenient for DM that this alleged private remark of David Cameron’s has hit the headlines, via an unidentified ‘well-placed source’,  just 4 days before voting starts for the Labour leadership.   It is of course the oldest trick in

Strange but true: the Cameroons are wary of a Labour Party led by David Miliband. The Guardian's Nick Watt has been eavesdropping and he's gathered a few choice quotes. Kool-aid drinking Tories say: "David Cameron said the candidate he hoped for was Ed Miliband, and the candidate he most feared was David Miliband."  "On the whole we would prefer if Ed Miliband won. Hi...

David Miliband MP, Labour's Foreign Secretary, has responded to reports that Vaclav Klaus has signed the Lisbon Treaty and commented on David Cameron's failure to clarify his policy on the treaty. David Miliband told Labour Matters: "So much for David Cameron's cast iron guarantee to hold a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty." "As British Foreign Secretary, I would welcome Mr Cameron&#...

Score the first round to Ed Miliband. In his debut PMQs performance, Miliband comfortably got the better of David Cameron, forcing him onto the defensive for most of the session. Miliband’s first question was a long and worthy one about the death of Linda Norgrove, the UK aid worker, in Afghanistan last week. Then, he moved to the proposed child benefit changes, asking Cameron to justify the...

The two stories linked opposite, by Andrew Rawnsley on Politics Home, and Nick Robinson at the BBC, both illustrate the continuing problem for David Cameron as he tries to work out the best position for the Tories in the present crisis. Robinson starts his assessment pithily - "David Cameron can't say I told you so, because he didn't"! ConservativeHome, meanwhile reports an ICM poll that suggests ...

David Miliband MP, Labour's Foreign Secretary, said in response to David Cameron's U-turn on the Lisbon Treaty: "British people now know what to expect when they hear a cast-iron guarantee from David Cameron on Europe: nothing. "This is not about taking back powers from Europe, it is about transferring power to the Eurosceptics on his backbenches. "David Cameron's proposals to opt o...

David Cameron and Ed Miliband both gave speeches on the riots this morning and the political dividing lines between the two are becoming more and more apparent. Cameron argues that these riots were about culture not poverty, Miliband thinks you can’t ignore inequality. Cameron believes that society needs two parent families, Miliband that it is about parental responsibility. Cameron doesn...

Guardian falls for classic misdirection on Labour leadership A "well-placed source" tells the Guardian: "David Cameron said the candidate he hoped for was Ed Miliband, and the candidate he most feared was David Miliband." Isn't it convenient the "well placed source" said that just when the ballots go out? If I was that journalist I'd think - 'hmmmm, is there an agenda here?' But clearly people are more gullible there.

David Cameron jumps, David Miliband follows... If David Cameron has nothing else he has nerve. If you doubt it, check out that interview with Andrew Marr in Blackpool last September when the chips were down and see how he breezes through it (though he gets a rougher ride on policy from Andrew Neil) despite the immense pressure. David Cameron is starting to look like a statesman After having shown zero inclination towards giving away any outlo...
