Caroline Lucas has just won the Green Party leadership election with 92% of the vote. Rumours that she is about to grow a moustache and answer to the name Saddam are apparently wide of the mark. Seriously though, the Lib Dems should be worried about this. Not panicked by any means, but at least

Is this a harmless poll or the grass roots being sounded out? Previous Lib/Lab coalitions are, in my opinion the main reason why the Lib Dems are still the third party in British politics, as when things get bad for Labour the Lib Dems jump in. By accepting coalitions in the past they have sewn themselves into the position of the Third Party. Should the possibility arise, I hope the Lib Dems take ...

According to Adam Price the new MORI poll giving the Tories 52%, Labour 24% and the Lib Dems 12% if turned into seats at Westminster would give the SNP-Plaid group 25-30 seats, making them the third force in UK politics and leaving the Lib Dems in the wilderness. According to Blog Menai the poll leaves the Lib Dems with 8 seats. The silver line in the Lib Dems' cloud is that once again they

The Lib Dems did something today that the party hasn’t explicitly done in a long time: it launched its campaign for the European elections focusing on the positive impact of British membership of the European Union. Non-Lib Dems might casually read that sentence and shrug bemusedly – the Lib Dems are a pro-European party, they’ll

A vote for the Lib Dems is a vote for the Lib Dems. It is not a vote for the Conservative or Labour Parties. It is not a way of ‘Letting Gordon in through the backdoor’, or of tacitly consenting to a Cameroonian ‘DIY’ society. It is a vote for the Lib Dems. Since the debates,

In a desperate bid to get some sort of attention for their conference from the media Kirsty Williams has today launched an attack on her own MPs. As if Peter Black trying his best to lose Ceredigion for the Lib Dems wasn’t bad enough now the party leader aims to be equally as unhelpful to the Lib Dems in Montgomeryshire. I am sure most people when deciding who to vote for at the leadership e...

Nick Clegg started the Lib Dem conference with an interview calling for ‘savage cuts’ in public spending and ended it with a speech trying to position the Lib Dems as the main party of the left in Britain. That pretty much sums up the strategic incoherence of this conference which has left the Lib Dems worse off than they were before. The Lib Dems have had an awful week for seve...

With New Labour so unpopular, many members are tempted to vote Lib Dem, in the belief that they would pursue less Tory policies. A story carried by the Birmingham Post highlights how the Lib Dems try to be all things to all people, and are no friends of trade unionists. Not only are the Lib Dems...

The Lib Dems are gathering in Bournemouth for their party conference. They will be in two minds as they find Labour leadership speculation dominating the headlines. In one way its good, it shows the party of Government in trouble, in other ways it relegates Lib Dem announcements further down the news pecking order. We are used to the Lib Dems being referred to as the third party, and in numbers

So - my old partner in crime is leaving the Lib Dems! Mark Pack - my campaign manager who masterminded the Lib Dem strategy in Haringey and Hornsey & Wood Green and who has been at Lib Dem HQ forever - is going to become an Associate Director at Mandate PR. I think they are well lucky to get him! He is such a brilliant man! Can't imagine what the Lib Dems will do without him. But I think it will b...
