Iceland is the sort of place to which Scottish separatists tend to look for inspiration. And now, it is giving them plenty. There is a vast financial services sector based in Scotland, and it is very dear to the popular heart there. As well it might be. An independent Scotland could not underwrite one, never mind all, of the Royal Bank of Scotland, HBOS, Standard Life, Scottish Widows, and all the...

In asserting that Iceland must repay in full, Britain is making two contestable assertions. The first is that if Iceland’s private fund can’t pay, the responsibility passes to the Government and taxpayers. EU rules do not say this, if only because they fail to provide for such dramatic circumstances. The second is that Iceland must

[iceland] lesson in how to live frugally Ever since the beginning of this blog, I've been running posts on Iceland and so the recent crisis can be seen from the Icelandic perspective. Iceland is not Russia but there are some traits common to both. In a situation of total collapse, certain nations are going to survive and others are going to struggle greatly. Taking, say, Britain, the U.S., Australia, France, Iceland and Russia, I...

With Both the (Halifax) Bank of Scotland and the Royal Bank of Scotland likely to be in Government control for the time being - and certainly in more of a mess than Barclays, Lloyds and HSBC, would an Independent Scotland have gone the way of Iceland during this crisis, or would they have come cap-in-hand to the English as they did the last time they got ideas above their station? Scotland's banki...

Joining Adam on this week's Sunday Live are Nicola Sturgeon MSP, Deputy Leader of the SNP and Yvette Cooper MP, Chief Secretary to the Treasury. Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond famously claimed that an independent Scotland would join an 'arc of prosperity' - Iceland to the north, Norway to the east and Ireland to the West. But with Ireland facing a recession and Iceland ...

Gordon Brown writes “that we are prepared to share the risks as well as the opportunities. And when things are difficult we are in a position to support each other — stronger together, weaker apart”. O a separate Scotland as part of an “arc of prosperity” with Iceland, the Irish Republic and Norway, he points out that Iceland is broke, Ireland is in recession, and Norway has gone cap in ...

Russia are apparently about to bail out Iceland. I wonder what they want in return ? Iceland is technically in NATO, although it has no full military forces and traditionally relies on the US. Still they may still keep their country, if they joined the EU they would lose it forever.

The loss of the Bank of Scotland is a national disgrace. A disgrace not brought about by Scotland - but by Westminster and this Labour Government. Some time ago I posted a blog that related how Iceland’s commercial banks - especially Landsbanki and Kaupthing - had high value CDS figures (610 and 856 respectively) which meant that
