I’ve written another Comment is Free article on this very subject: Make no mistake: this election is no shoo-in for either candidate. They are both extremely strong contenders. At its heart, it has become quickly apparent that this election, more than any other in recent years, is going to be about what the Liberal Democrats are

Yesterday I suggested that the Liberal Democrats had cause to distance themselves from the controversial Policy Exchange report, Cities Unlimited, on the grounds that two of its authors were Liberal Democrats. One of the pair, Marc Oliver Hartwich, has got in touch fervently to deny being a Liberal Democrat, explaining that he has merely advised a Lib Dem peer: "I have worked for Matthew Oakeshot...

So Jenny Randerson has thrown her hat into the ring, challenging Kirsty Williams for the leadership of the Welsh Liberal Democrats. In a contest like this one (ie a Lib Dem one), there's no point asking about the candidates' policies. Lib Dems, after all, will promise anything and everything to anyone and everyone. Instead, let's concentrate on what they look like. Or rather, who they look like.

Like all Liberal Democrats, I would never support a Tory government. Most of us have spent many years asking countless people to vote Lib Dem to “keep the Tories out”, but I actually think that’s exactly what we’ve done. Without the Liberal Democrats the Tories would have a majority now. So many Lib Dems seats are

The problem with the Lib Dems is they are neither liberal nor true democrats. Their lack of liberalism is obvious in their backing for a huge range of regulatory interference with our daily lives, and their supine acceptance of so much regulation made in Brussels. Practically every problem produces a Lib Dem answer

Nick Clegg MP, the Leader of the Liberal Democrats, gives his keynote speech at the climax of our autumn conference in Bournemouth. In it he highlights that the Liberal Democrats are now the only party that can deliver a fairer Britain.

Those pesky Lib Dems I recently happened across a leaflet created by the Liberal Democrats that stated quite categorically that "only the Liberal Democrats can beat Labour in Edinburgh North & Leith".Quite a claim from the party that is trailing way out in 4th in terms of nationwide popularity. So I looked into the detail some more.First off, I can't let this go as it drives me up the pole. The Lib Dem bar chart is man...

Jo Christie-Smith is inviting entries for the new edition of Who's Who in the Liberal Democrats: Who’s Who in the Lib Dems is not just for Parliamentarians and the great and the good, they are already covered in the Lib Dems website (and even better on the new Lib Dem website that will be coming soon and I’ve had a sneak preview of). No, Who’s Who in the Lib Dems is also for...

A lovely little tale about Liberal Democrats dirty campaigning tactics on the BBC's Cornish pages: Liberal Democrats have apologised after a campaign leaflet was sent out which uses a swear word to describe a Cornish nationalist candidate. The paperwork was distributed on behalf of Anna Pascoe, Lib Dem candidate for Cornwall Council elections on 4 June. It calls Mebyon Kernow candidate Stuart Cull...

Guido Fawkes regularly attacks Labour for its blog failures, but Labour bloggers are nowhere near as tedious as the Lib Dems. The Lib Dem blogosphere centres on an extremely dull site called Liberal Democrat Voice. The rival, Lib Dem Blogs, is even worse. Yet the blogosphere is made for small political forces like the Lib Dems. It gives activists and candidates the ability to punch above their wei...

Lib Dem Voice has learned the sad news from Cowley Street: The Liberal Democrats are having to begin a redundancy process to reduce the number of POLD [Parliamentary Office of the Liberal Democrats] staff by over 20 positions. This is following the confirmation that the party will not be receiving Short Money. The losses will take place
