The European media continues to report on the disagreements between eurozone governments over the size of the bail-out package and eurozone bonds. Handelsblatt reports that Angela Merkel continues to publicly oppose Eurobonds, stating that they would require significant changes to the treaties, “a problem which [ECB President] Trichet ignores”.

The Government yesterday published its Bill containing the so-called ‘referendum lock’, designed to prevent the transfer of powers from Westminster to Brussels without voters’ consent, and a ‘sovereignty clause’, which ministers say will assert the primacy of Parliament.

The WSJ reports that Hungary’s government has told the EU and the IMF that they are ignoring the economic risks of excessive austerity measures and that Budapest can't make deeper spending cuts. Hungary's Economy Minister, György Matolcsy, is quoted saying, “We told our partners that further austerity packages were out of the question.

Following yesterday’s meeting between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, the WSJ reports that the two agreed that Europe needs more integrated “economic government”. Nicolas Sarkozy accepted Germany’s calls for strengthened economic governance to take place at the level of all 27 member states, not just the eurozone countries.

Discussions between the Irish government, the EU and IMF continue regarding a bailout for the country. The WSJ quotes Irish Finance Minister Brian Lenihan saying, "It's clear we will need some form of external assistance...We have to find a resolution to our banking difficulties with whatever external assistance is appropriate.

Der Spiegel reports that the Bundesbank suspects a French “conspiracy” over the €25 billion which the ECB has spent purchasing Greek bonds so far. According to the magazine, Bundesbank officials suspect that the move is intended to allow French banks to unload their Greek bonds.
